The Canyon was buzzing on Sunday 26th April as over 200 young people, volunteers, and more than 40 (very patient) parent helpers came together to celebrate St George’s Day in true Scouting style.

Activities ranged from climbing, archery and shooting to crafts and nature trails, offering something for every section, from Squirrels and Beavers through to Scouts and Explorers, with lots of fun and laughter to be had.

But don’t just take our word for it – here’s what the young people (from 5th Stevenage Air Scout Group) had to say:

Jacob T (Cub)
“We went shooting, and then did arts and crafts, and then a nature trail, then fire lighting, then rock climbing. My favourite was fire lighting because I lit a fire!”

Stanley S (Cub)
“The first activity I did was air rifle shooting, which was fun. At the craft area we decorated cookies, ate them and got messy – they were yummy! We went on a nature walk through the woods, finding signs with animals and bugs on them and learning facts. Pitching a tent was tricky, but we managed it in the end. We then stood in a circle and said our promise before marching back with someone holding the flag. It was a very nice day in the sun.”

George P (Scout)
“I started my day by arriving at Fairlands Valley Park, ready for a full-on adventure. My absolute favourite activity was shooting pellets from a real-life rifle. It felt exciting, different, and was definitely the highlight of the day. I also really enjoyed archery, fire-lighting (especially toasting marshmallows!), and even made a small rope, which I’ve never done before.”

Ben C (Scout)
“I really enjoyed my day at the Canyon for St George’s Day. My favourite activities were climbing and abseiling – I reached the top of the wall both times and completed two successful abseils. I also had a great time shooting, pitching tents, playing cricket and rounders, making an arcade game and doing badge making. Thank you to all the leaders and volunteers who gave up their time to make it happen.”

Amelia (Scout)
“St George’s Day at the Canyon is a time when Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers can all come together and enjoy activities like rock climbing, abseiling, nature trails, games, shooting and archery. I think being a Scout is nice because it helps you become more confident, make new friends, talk to people, and work together to learn life skills and earn badges.”

Thank You

A huge thank you to all the leaders, helpers and volunteers who gave up their time and energy to make the day such a success!
