Scouting in Stevenage is entirely volunteer-led, with thousands of hours donated weekly by over 100 adult volunteers.
One of the biggest myths about Scouting is that our membership is decreasing due to a lack of young people wanting to become Scouts. Nothing could be further from the truth. Scouts in the UK is a growing Movement: membership increased by 16% in 2022, reaching 420,000 young people. We grew again in 2023, a further 8,800 young members joining.
Over 90,000 young people nationally, and over 4,000 across Hertfordshire are hoping to join Scouting. We have way too many young people on our waiting lists simply because we do not have enough adults to help out. Your support will bring us one step closer to enabling more young people enjoy what Scouting can offer.

No special skills or knowledge needed
You don’t need to have any experience of Scouting to get involved. Neither do you need to have any special skills… and you definitely don’t have to be a Bear Grylls!
You decide what you’d like to do, and how much time you would like to give, whether it’s an hour a day, a week, or a month, or even less.
Whether you want to work with young people directly or help out behind the scenes, there’s something for everyone at Scouts. Roles don’t have to be defined; we work with you to shape your involvement.
It’s super fun and rewarding
We’ll give you plenty of support, a great team to work with, easy access to training to loads of resources online, and the guarantee of lots of adventure. It’s a lovely way to make new friends and get to know others in your community.
Share your experience and skills with young people, while developing yourself. There’s a reason why some of us have been doing this for decades. It’s so rewarding, it can be difficult to stop!

Explore opportunities
These are just some of the ways you could help:
- Leaders – planning and delivering an awsome programme with a team, working directly with young people
- Helpers/Supporters – help us with running games and activities, fundraising, publicity, administration, maintenance, stock-keeping etc. on an ad-hoc or regular basis
- Trustees – oversee our governance, ensuring that Scouting in the District and across our Groups is being run safely and legally
Or anything else you have in mind!
